چکیده

AIDAN SUDBURY MONASH UNIVERSITY Abstract. When gas molecules bind to a surface they may do so in such a way that the adsorption of one molecule inhibits the arrival of others. Two models which have frequently been studied are the “dimer model” and the “blocking model”, and rather complete solutions for these are known on fixed tree structures or Bethe lattices. In this paper comparisons are made between the occupation probabilities for vertices between fixed and random trees.

Parking on a Random Tree

Consider an infinite tree with random degrees, i.i.d. over the sites, with a prescribed probability distribution with generating function G(s). We consider the following variation of Rényi’s parking problem, alternatively called blocking RSA (random sequential adsorption): at every vertex of the tree a particle (or “car”) arrives with rate one. The particle sticks to the vertex whenever the ver...

Series expansion and computer simulation studies of random sequential adsorption

We discuss two important techniques, series expansion and Monte Carlo simulation, for random sequential adsorption study. Random sequential adsorption is an idealization for surface deposition where the time scale of particle relaxation is much longer than the time scale of deposition. Particles are represented as extended objects which are adsorbed to a continuum surface or lattice sites. Once...

Continuum random sequential adsorption of polymer on a flat and homogeneous surface.

Random sequential adsorption (RSA) of polymer, modeled as a chain of identical spheres, is systematically studied. In order to control precisely anisotropy and number of degrees of freedom, two different kinds of polymers are used. In the first one, monomers are placed along a straight line, whereas in the second, relative orientations of particles are random. Such polymers fill a flat homogene...

Scaling behavior near jamming in random sequential adsorption.

For the random sequential adsorption model, we introduce the "availability" as a variable corresponding to the number of available locations in which an adsorbate can be accommodated. We investigate the relation of the availability to the coverage of the adsorbent surface over time. Power law scaling between the two is obtained both through numerical simulations and analytical techniques for bo...

Shapes for maximal coverage for two-dimensional random sequential adsorption.

The random sequential adsorption of various particle shapes is studied in order to determine the influence of particle anisotropy on the saturated random packing. For all tested particles there is an optimal level of anisotropy which maximizes the saturated packing fraction. It is found that a concave shape derived from a dimer of disks gives a packing fraction of 0.5833, which is comparable to...
